It all began when I was reading in 1 Nephi .
In chapter 2 Laman and Lemuel murmur against their father, Lehi, for leading them out of Jerusalem and into the wilderness. They also murmur about Lehi leaving all their inheritance, their gold, and precious things. They were upset they would die in the wilderness. Lets just say the they were extremely unhappy about the idea of leaving everything they knew and owned behind for a trip they were not interested in taking. It also included that they murmured because their father, Lehi, was a visionary man, and Laman and Lemuel knew not the dealings of God. Because they didn't understand the purpose of leaving their home they didn't agree with their fathers decision, but went along anyway.
Chapter 3 continues with Nephi's brothers murmuring because their father asked them to do a hard thing. Return to Jerusalem to get the brass plates containing scriptures and a family history. Are they happy with any thing their father wants them to do? Last chapter they wanted to go back to Jerusalem, now they are to mad to take the trek back. It goes on to say that because Nephi did not murmur he would be favored of the Lord. No murmuring makes the Lord happy. The chapter continues with Nephi and his brothers returning to Jerusalem about a 12-14 day trip one way to get the brass plates. After unsuccessfully attempting to retrieve the plate twice, Laman and Lemuel are past murmuring and are now hitting Sam and Nephi with rods and speaking hard words. An angel came and put a stop to the beatings, and told the brothers to go get the brass plates. After the angel left, The two brothers began murmuring again, saying that Laban (the person with the plates) would kill them. Laman and Lemuel continue to murmur into chapter 4 where Nephi leaves them at the wall of Jerusalem and goes into the city himself. Personally I would have been happy to leave the murmering behind.

So what is murmuring anyway?
When I google it I discovered the archaic meaning is
- "express one's discontent about (someone or something) in a subdued manner)
- synonyms: complain, mutter, grumble, grouse,"
So if I look at this is seems to me that murmuring is a quiet version of complaining, it might be the same thing? Maybe I need to look a little deeper into this.
The student institute manual included a section on murmuring this week in Chapter 2. Elder H Ross of the Seventy explained the three steps of murmuring.
- Question. They question "first in their own minds and then [plant] questions in the minds of others."
- Rationalize. They "rationalize and excuse themselves from doing what they [have] been instructed to do...Thus they [make] an excuse for disobedience."
- Slothfulness, Excuses lead to the third step "Slothfulness in following the commandment."
If I think these steps of murmuring, it sounds the same to me as complaining?
Time to google complaining.
Time to google complaining.
- express dissatisfaction or annoyance about a state of affairs or an event.
- synonyms: protest, grumble, whine, bleat, carp, grouse
I did notice something in 1 Nephi Chapter 5 about complaining too. It was Sariah, she had mourned and "complained against my father" telling him that his sons had died in the wilderness, and that they too would die in the wilderness. As I look at this verse further "complained" has a footnote which states "TG Murmuring"
So in answer to my inquiring as to if murmuring was the same as complaining I would say YES They are one in the same. \
Although I do think murmuring sounds more quiet version of complaining, I know at our house complaining can become louder than using s subdued manner.

So I guess the biggest thing for me to really work on, after all this, is to make sure the murmur process stoops before it becomes disobedience. It needs to not make it out of my mouth so I don't inflect it on anyone else. Then they do not start questioning, and starting the murmur process too. Murmuring and complaining can seem to be quite infections.
So the best thing I could do is to "Stop it", Bite my tongue" and "Let virtue garnish thy thoughts" or use gratitude, but that is bet left for another day to think about and ponder.
In the mean time, I guess the best question is did you come to the same conclusion as I did. Do you think murmuring and complaining the same thing?
