Mary (Mother of Christ)

Her Story (My Narrative and Pondering)
Mary was espoused to Joseph.  When she received a visit from an angel.  He told her she was  highly favored and blessed among women.  He told her not to be afraid, but that she will have a son, and call his name Jesus, and that holy ghost would come upon her, the son would be the son of God.

He also told her that her older cousin Elizabeth was also having a child in her old age, as with the Lord all things were possible.  Mary accepted this and told the angel she was the Lords servant and to do his will.  How did she feel after a visit from the angel?  Peace I am sure, but what made her decide to go visit her cousin?  Did her parents encourage her to leave because she was unwed and pregnant?  Did they know?  How righteous she must have been to not question, but accept everything so quickly.  Did she ever doubt?

She then left to go visit Elizabeth.  When she arrived, Elizabeth knew immediately Mary was pregnant her Savior.  She spoke to Mary about how special her baby was.  Mary stayed for three months then traveled home again.   I think about how Mary would have spent those three months with Elizabeth.  I imagine she was close to her cousin and would have been in need of encouragement before coming home again unwed and pregnant.  She would have needed that reminder that her child was special, and not to be afraid, with the Lord, all things are possible.

Before they were married she was caught pregnant.  To be caught she must have been experiencing some symptoms.  Was she ill?  Was she showing when she returned from her visit with Elizabeth?  How did she stand against those that accused her and wanted to kill her?  Was she brave?  Can I stand that brave?
While Joseph was debating whither or not he should marry or leave Mary, he had an angel visit him in a dream.  He was told to take Mary as his wife, and that she would have a son, and his name would be Jesus.  Mary also had an angel visit her telling her of the birth of her son.  How amazing to experience such a dream or vision.  Wouldn't it make it so much easier for them to relate to one another in their relationship when they both had experienced great spiritual visions and visitations?

Joseph choose to listen to the angel, and took Mary as his wife.  He "knew her not" until after her son was born.  Why did they not consummate their marriage?  Was is a custom during pregnancy?  Or to prove Christ was the son of God?  Were they waiting to get to know each other better?

How wonderful for Mary to be married to a man who will love her and take he no matter what.  He also showed his devotion not just to Mary but also to God.  They would make great earthly parents of Christ.

After Christ was born, Mary was with her young child when she was visited by wise men from the east.  They came to her home and worshiped her son and brought him gifts.  Where was her husband?  How did she greet these strangers from another land?  How did it feel to see her son worshiped?  How much of the scriptures and prophesies did she understand about her sons mission and hardships of his earthly duty?  What did she do with the gifts presented?

Shortly after the wise men left, Joseph woke Mary up in the middle of the night to tell her they must leave quickly that night for Egypt because their child was in danger from King Herod.  Mary left her home, and family that night to flee to a strange land.  Did she truly understand the danger her son was in or did she follow her husband with faith, knowing he was listening to the Lord?  Did she know anyone or anything about Egypt?  Was she able to communicate with her family?  What did they leave behind in their haste?

Later, and angel again visited Mary's husband, this time telling them King Herod was dead, and it was now safe to return to Israel, but not Bethlehem.  Mary traveled with her son back to Israel and set up a new home.  How was it to return to the same country her family lived in again?  How much did she know about the happenings in Israel while she was away?  Did she know that all other other children her sons age was now dead?  Did Jesus remind the others mothers of their own killed children?

Scriptures Used

What I Learned
I never had looked at the scriptures from Mary view before.  Just from these few verses I realized she experienced many trials in her life. Things I had never though about until I put myself into her shoes.  She experienced a visit from an angel, pregnancy out of wedlock, people wanting to kill her, and her espoused debating to leave her.  She then was married but her trials didn't end there.

Mary was woken one night by her husband and told to leave her home and family immediately and travel to a strange land. I wonder if I would have the same unwavering faith as she did.

She then returned back to her homeland and she now has the only child her sons age.  All the other mothers have had their children killed by King Harold.  How much loss she must have seen.
