The Wise Man Built his House Upon the Rock. What rock did he build upon?

In primary the young children are taught a song about the wise man and the foolish man.  Each child acts out the rains coming down and the floods coming up, and the houses staying or washing away depending on where the house has been built.  This is a great song to keep the young children entertained and have fun with music.

Here is the song in ASL (American Sign Language)

But what is this song really teaching us.

The song was created from Matthew 7:24-27.

24 ¶Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:
25 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.
26 And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand:
27 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.

From this we see that it is desired that we build ourselves like a wise man on the rock.  We do not like the idea of being a foolish man and having our house wash away.  So if we are wanting to be like a wise man what do we need to do?

It states in the above scripture we need to heareth these sayings of mine and doeth them.

Here is another similar scripture from 3 Nephi 18:12-13

12 And I give unto you a commandment that ye shall do these things. And if ye shall always do these things blessed are ye, for ye are built upon my rock.
13 But whoso among you shall do more or less than these are not built upon my rock, but are built upon a sandy foundation; and when the rain descends, and the floods come, and the winds blow, and beat upon them, they shall fall, and the gates of hell are ready open to receive them.

And again a third similar scripture from 3 Nephi 11:30-40.

9 Verily, verily, I say unto you, that this is my doctrine, and whoso buildeth upon this buildeth upon my rock, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against them.
40 And whoso shall declare more or less than this, and establish it for my doctrine, the same cometh of evil, and is not built upon my rock; but he buildeth upon a sandy foundation, and the gates of hell stand open to receive such when the floods come and the winds beat upon them.

Three times we are warned to build on the rock and to follow his doctrine, or be washed away.

My question as I was studying this reading was if there was a specific doctrine we are to follow to build on the rock? or is it all the doctrines of the gospel? or teachings of Christ?

I decided to check out what was taught just before each of these quotes and see if there was a common theme or if it is different aspects.  These are all direct quotes from Christ while he was teaching the people.

If we go back to the first quote I gave in Matthew we can see what he taught.  This particular quote was used in conclusion to the sermon on the mount.  The warning about following the wise and foolish man were the last thing he said as he finished his sermon to them.   That would make me assume, he wanted all of his teaching to be followed and done.

Now if we check the other two sections of scripture we should be able to see what was happening before each of these quotes too.

The second scripture from 3 Nephi 18 is given to the those at the temple in the Americas when Christ was finished speaking to them.  These two were almost his last words to them before he ascended to heaven after teaching them, healing them, and spending all his time with them that couldn’t be written.  These again would make me think that is all his teachings that he is asking us to follow.

The last verse I found from 3 Nephi 11 was actually at the beginning of when the Christ came down to visit those at the temple in the Americas.  He had just come down and had each of them touch his side and hands.  He gave twelve the authority to baptise and then commanded them to baptise and to be like the wise man and do what he asks of them, then proceeded into the rest of his teaching.

This last one seemed like it was used two fold.  It communicates the importance of baptism, but also
to tells the group to listen and do what he asks of them, not just listen, before he continues to give the congregation the rest of his teachings.

I enjoyed looking up these scriptures and really understanding the meaning of these words we have used and sung since our primary days.  We are to follow all his teaching to be built on the rock and firm on a foundation and not washed away.
